I began my political career at a local branch of the Democratic Party, having identified the need to build a strong, liberal alternative for South Africa. It was one of the greatest honours of my life to be elected to office in 1999 at the age of 22, allowing me to represent the community of Durban North on the eThekwini Council.
I went on to lead the DA’s caucus on that council where I served until the 2009 General Election and was then elected to the KZN Provincial Legislature and shortly thereafter as the KZN Provincial Leader.
In 2011, I moved to the National Assembly to advance my career and take on new challenges, personally and for the party. In 2014, I experienced another career highlight when I was appointed as the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition which I held until 2019.
My 20 years in politics has allowed me to build on from my local branch to Parliament, giving me a unique insight into the needs of activists and public representatives at every level.
The future of all South Africans is safe when we focus on fixing what has gone wrong. We need to actively work to fix inequality, to grow our economy, and to ensure South Africans are safe and have the maximum amount of personal freedom.
My wealth of leadership, management experience and my plan for the DA, is rooted in our values and led by the clear vision of building a new majority in this country. Our people, both internally and those who represent deserve more from the DA.
I am proudly married to Terry and have three beautiful daughters: Ashleigh, Caroline and Olivia who I want to see grow up in a safe, caring and prosperous South Africa.
